• West is Kinkora, Kensington, TOSH, and Westisle Families of Schools.
• East is Montague, Morell, and Souris Families of schools.
• Central is Charlottetown & Bluefield Families of Schools.
• French is all CSFL schools & CSFL Board office staff, as well as 1770 sub-locals.
• Branch Based is both PSB branch offices, as well as the EAL office.

The executive has reviewed the by-laws and prepared some proposals for amendments that will be voted on by members at the AGM. Please keep an eye out for the email from your area VP with these proposals for your review.

CUPE Local 1770 Executive hopes all our members of local 1770 have had a wonderful summer and enjoyed some much deserved down time!

Our school administrative assistant group will return to work on Monday August 25th.

Students will return to school on Thursday September 4th.

A special shout out to the branch based members of local 1770 for their work over the summer months. What the public doesn’t see going on behind the scenes is:

• Payroll Staff setting up new employees and paying the 12 month employees
• Accounting staff paying the bills and making sure supplies are purchased
• School safety staff making sure employees get the training necessary for return to work
• Student Services making special accomodations happen and getting things in order for the return of an extensive team of school based staff
• Policy and Planning assisting every department and our team leaders
• Property Services assisting organizing all the summer projects to get school in tip top shape
• Transportation Services getting our new students set up with buses, and getting everything in order to welcome back the drivers

There isn’t enough time to list all the things the people above actually do over the summer months, but we hope you were all able to take some time off for summer vacation and get a much deserved break!

A special thank you to our brothers & sisters in CUPE Local 1775, the custodial & maintenance group for all their work over the summer months, most in schools without climate control, during record breaking temperatures on PEI. Staff and students will return to fresh, clean & safe schools thanks to the work of Local 1775 and we truly appreciate all these people do for us!

We hope that all members returning to work, or beginning work for the first time have a smooth start-up, and that the 2025-2026 school year is a great one.

Over the past two days, 6 delegates from CUPE Local 1770 got to attend the 45th annual CUPE PEI Convention in Charlottetown.

 

The convention is an important event that members from all CUPE Locals get to attend and help shape our Island’s division of CUPE. As local 1770 members we get to connect with other locals from the education sector, as well as hear insight into other sectors such as the health sector and and more.

On Thursday at noon the entire convention gathered with noise makers, banners, & signs and as a group marched down to the Provincial Government office buildings and held a rally to make it clear that our public services must remain public, and to continue our fight for fair and honest collective bargaining. We made lots of noise and had people watching us out the windows and people gathered in the park across the street listening to our chants and our speakers. CUPE is best when we show solidarity and this rally was a great showing of how we can band together!

We would like to congratulate Ashley Clark on her re-election as CUPE PEI president! Ashley has been the most amazing voice for our Island CUPE members and we are extremely grateful to have her return for another term. Congratulation to Local 1770’s own Wanda Griffin who joins the CUPE PEI team as the new Education West representative, as well as all the other members from other sectors and groups that let their name stand on the ballot and accepted positions. A special thanks & congratulations to Linda Jones who after many years as CUPE PEI Treasurer has retired, all the best in your retirement Linda!

Each year the Easter Seals Ambassador for PEI stops by to our convention and shares their story. The 2025 Easter Seals Ambassador, Remi Dean, gave members a great presentation to kick off our annual donation drive for Easter Seals. CUPE Local 1770 donated $250 in accordance to our by-laws. As a group all the CUPE PEI locals were able to raise $9,000, which CUPE National President, Mark Hancock, has pledged CUPE National to match. In total CUPE is donating $18,000 to the Easter Seals PEI Society!

 

We currently have a vacant Trustee position due to one of our Trustee’s taking employment outside of the union.

The vacant position is a 3 year term that began in November 2024.

As per our By-Laws the duties of Trustee are:
• enforce the CUPE Constitution and these By-Laws
• act as an Auditing Committee on behalf of the members and audit the books and accounts of the Treasurer, the Recording Secretary, and the committees at least once every calendar year. 
• Meet twice yearly to audit the financial records of the Local 
• Make a written report of their findings to the first membership meeting following the completion of each audit 
• be responsible to ensure that monies have not been paid out without proper constitutional or membership authorization 
• ensure that proper financial reports have been made to the membership 
• use audit forms supplied by National Office and send a copy of each yearly audit to the National Secretary-Treasurer in accordance with the conditions of the CUPE Constitution. 
• Submit in writing to the President and Treasurer any recommendations and/or concerns they feel should be reviewed in order to ensure that the Local Union’s funds, records, and accounts are being maintained by the Treasurer in an organized, correct, and proper manner. 
• Inspect at least once a year, any stocks, bonds, securities, office furniture and equipment, and titles or deeds to property that may at any time be owned by the Local Union, and report their findings to the membership.

The executive is looking to fill this position and at this time and would ask that any nominations or interested members please reply to the email you have received from Sawyer by no later than April 2, 2025. On April 3^rd we will review the names brought forward and proceed with an online vote if necessary. If you did not receive the email, reach out to Sawyer to have your email address updated or added to our mailing list. Executive email addresses are available on the “Contact Us” page.

We want to wish all our members and their families a safe & relaxing holiday season filled with cheer!

On the final school day of 2024, here are a few reminders:

 – The final day of work before Christmas break for the 10-month employees is Friday December 20, 2024.

– The first day back to work after the Christmas break for the 10-month employees is Thursday January 2, 2025.

– As per our collective agreement the following days are observed as holidays off without loss of pay; Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day. More information on holidays can be found in Article 27 in the collective agreement.

CUPE Local 1770 AGM

CUPE Local 1770 will be hosting their AGM on Thursday November 7, 2024 at the Oval (Credit Union Place) in Summerside.

Registration will begin at 9:00AM, and AGM business will commence at 9:30AM.

The AGM is a paid day by the employer and all members are expected to attend unless they have an approved leave with the employer. If you can not attend please let your area VP know as soon as possible.

 

There are a number of positions up for nomination at the upcoming AGM. If you are interested in any of the following positions please reach out to a member of the Nomination Committee: Kelly Matheson, Sarah Martin, & Wanda Woodgate.

Positions for nomination are as follows:

• President – 2 year term
• Recording Secretary – 2 year term
• Treasurer – 2 year term
• Three PD Committee School Admin Group – 1 year term each
• Three PD Committee Branch Based Group – 1 year term each
• Two PD Committee French Board Group – 1 year term each
• Three Bargaining Committee positions – Term will end upon signing of a new Collective Agreement
• One Bargaining Committee Alternate position – Term will end upon signing of a new Collective Agreement
• One Sergeant at Arms – 2 year term
• One Trustee – 3 year term
• One Bursary Committee West/French Group – 2 year term
• Two Bursary Committee East Group – 2 year term
• One Group Benefits Trustee – 5 year term

Please consider offering your name for one of these positions or committees as the local is better when people get involved! If you have any questions regarding a position you can reference our by-laws or reach out to the nomination committee to get more information.

If any members have any by-law amendment’s they would like to put forward at this years AGM, please let your area VP know no later than October 11th.

We are looking forward to returning to an in-person format for our AGM for the first time since 2019, seeing each and everyone of you!

Casuals who are not in relief positions are not required to attend but are more than welcome to attend, we ask that if you are a casual member please reach out to your area VP to let us know that you will be attending.

The Oval is located at the rear of the Credit Union Place, you will enter at the entrance to the West End Bar & Grill (next to the race track), and make your way to the second floor.

Happy Summer Local 1770!

We have successfully made it through another busy school year!

To our 10 month members enjoy your summer vacation, and to our 12 month members we hope you get some downtime in the sun, and maybe a few beach days!

Congratulations to our members who will be closing their schools for the final time this year as they gear up for retirement. ENJOY, you earned it!!

  We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing summer!

 

Your bargaining team hosted the ratification meeting for your collective agreement. A presentation was held and members voted 86% in favor of acceptance of the tentative collective agreement. Thank you for coming out for those who were able to attend. We will be communicating more information from the Employer on when to expect any retroactive pay as soon as we know it. Once the collective agreement is signed by the parties copies will be provided via email to the membership.
